Tips For Making Beeswax Candles Like A Professional

by Lewis Rhodes

If you have decided it is time to start making your own candles, then beeswax is a great choice for the wax.

There are many advantages of making your candles out of beeswax:

  • least-processed of waxes used to make candles
  • beeswax is a sustainable product
  • smells wonderful

Whether you want to make beeswax candles for your home, to give as gifts, or to start a home-based business, here are some tips to help you make them like a professional artisan:

Tip 1: Using the Correct Wick Size Matters

Whether you decide to use wicks made of cotton or wood fibers, it is vital that you use the correct size for the candle you are making. As a general rule, wick size directly correlates to the diameter of the candle. For example, a tall, thin beeswax taper candle uses a much thinner wick than a candle made in a recycled Mason jar. You will be able to tell if you used the wrong wick size once the candle is burned. If the wax melts all the way to the side of the candle within an hour or two of being lit, then the wick is the correct size. If the candle smokes excessively or the flame makes a cavern in the middle of the candle, then it is too small.

Tip 2: Always Add Fragrances or Essential Oils As Beeswax Is Cooling

While you may be tempted to add essential oils or fragrances to the beeswax as soon as it starts to melt, this is never a good idea. Instead, wait for the wax to completely melt and start to cool before adding to it. Adding candle fragrances or essential oils to wax that is still too hot will cause the fragrance to burn off during the candle-making process. The resulting candles won't produce any scent when they burn.

Tip 3: Plan for A 2-Week Curing Period

Beeswax candles need time to cure before you light them. Ideally, your candles should cure for at least two weeks. The curing process infuses the added fragrance and colors into the beeswax. Candles given ample curing time will burn better, burn cleaner, and smell better than those lit too soon.

Tip 4: Remove Spilled Wax Easily by Freezing

Finally, if you spilled any hot beeswax on your clothing, you can put the item in the freezer and easily remove the wax once it is cold. If you spilled on a carpet or rug, the wax can be removed by placing an ice cube on it until the wax hardens and comes loose.
